Garage door panel replacement cost

Typical

$280 – $900

Most jobs land near $480 · per panel, fitted

$280 to $900 for one panel fitted, and the labour is the small half. The real question is whether the panel can still be bought: on a door more than about ten years old the model is often discontinued, and a mismatched section is both obvious and a worse door.

What is in the price

  • The section itself
  • Removing the damaged one and fitting the new
  • Rebalancing and re-testing the door

Which panelThe bottom one is most often hit and is also the one carrying the cable brackets, which makes it the most labour.
Whether it is still madeA current model is a stock item. A discontinued one means a custom section, a longer wait and a colour that may not match.
Insulated or notAn insulated section costs roughly half again as much as a plain steel one.
How manyTwo damaged sections on an older door usually costs more than half a new door, at which point it stops being a repair.

When not to bother

The point where repairing is the wrong call

Two or more damaged panels, or any damaged panel on a door over fifteen years old. A new section on a faded door also never matches — sun changes the colour of the rest.

Is this your problem

How you know you need it

  • A dent deep enough to have bent the section's edge rather than just its face.
  • Rust starting at the bottom of the lowest panel, which is where water sits.
  • A section that has separated or delaminated, common on older insulated doors in Florida heat.
  • The door tracking differently since an impact — that is the panel, not the opener.

Before you say yes

What to ask whoever quotes you

  1. Is my door still in production? If it is not, there is no matching section and the conversation is about a whole door.
  2. How close will the colour be? Even a current model will not match a door that has had ten summers on it, and you should decide whether you mind before you pay.
  3. At what point does a whole door cost less than the panels? Two is usually the tipping point, three almost always — ask them to price both.
  4. Does the price include re-balancing? A different panel can change the weight, and the springs were sized for what was there.

Doing it yourself

Can you?

Not really. A single panel comes out from the inside with the door under spring tension, and the hinges and rollers have to come off and go back in the right order. It is not the most dangerous job on this site but it is the one most likely to end with a door that does not run right.

Also asked

Garage door panel replacement cost, answered

Can one panel be replaced on its own?

On a door still in production, yes, and it is much cheaper than a new door. The two things that stop it are age and colour: a discontinued model has no matching section, and even a current one will not match a door that has had ten Florida summers on it. Expect a visible difference and decide whether you mind.

How many panels before a new door is cheaper?

Two is usually the tipping point, three almost always. Panels are priced individually and labour is charged once, so the first section is the expensive one — but by the third you are approaching the price of a whole door that will match itself and start a new warranty.

Is a dented panel actually a problem?

It depends where. A dent in the face is cosmetic. A dent that has bent the section's edge, or pulled a hinge, changes how the door tracks — and a door that binds wears its rollers and its opener. If the door has started to sound different since the impact, it is not cosmetic.
