Garage door roller replacement cost

The inside face of a garage door with steel bracing across the panels and red and yellow warning labels on it.
Those red labels are on the spring assembly, and they are not decorative. — MF Garage Doors, Sebring, Florida.

Typical

$180 – $320

Most jobs land near $240 · for a set of ten, fitted

$180 to $320 for a full set of ten fitted. It is the single cheapest way to make a loud door quiet, and it is worth doing as a set rather than one at a time — the others are the same age and will follow.

What is in the price

  • Ten nylon rollers
  • Fitting, including the bottom brackets under cable tension
  • Lubrication and a balance check

What moves it

Why two quotes differ

FactorWhat it does to the number
Nylon or steelNylon is quieter and lasts longer. Steel is cheaper and is what most builders fit. The difference on a set is small enough that nylon is almost always the right call.
Sealed bearingsA sealed-bearing nylon roller costs a little more and runs for years without attention.
Whether the track is wornRollers that failed early usually failed because the track is out of line. Fixing one without the other is a repeat visit.

Is this your problem

How you know you need it

  • Grinding or rattling as the door moves, rather than a steady roll.
  • A wheel visibly wobbling on its stem, which you can watch from inside.
  • The door feeling like it is dragging in the track when nothing else has changed.
  • Black dust or metal shavings below the track, which is a steel roller wearing out.

Before you say yes

What to ask whoever quotes you

  1. Nylon or steel, and how many are you doing? Nylon on sealed bearings is quieter and lasts longer, and on a door under a bedroom it is the cheapest quiet you can buy.
  2. Are you doing the bottom rollers as well? They are in the bracket under spring tension, which is why they cost more to do and why they are not a homeowner job.
  3. Are the hinges worn too? They wear alongside the rollers and doing both together is one visit.

Doing it yourself

Can you?

The middle and top rollers, carefully, yes. The bottom pair are in the bottom bracket, under full spring tension, and they are not yours. If the job includes those, it is a call.

Also asked

Garage door roller replacement cost, answered

How do I know the rollers are the problem?

Noise and feel. Worn rollers grind or rattle rather than roll, and you can often see the wheel wobbling on its stem as the door moves. A door that has started to feel like it is dragging in the track, when nothing else has changed, is usually rollers.

Nylon or steel?

Nylon on sealed bearings is quieter and lasts longer, and it is the upgrade that most changes how a door sounds from inside the house. Steel is cheaper and is what most doors ship with. On a door under a bedroom, nylon is the cheapest quiet you can buy.

Can I change them myself?

The ones in the middle of the door, carefully, yes. The bottom roller is in the bottom bracket, and that bracket is under full spring tension — it is the part that injures people. If the job includes the bottom rollers it is not a job to do yourself.
