10x7 garage door

One vehicle with room to open the door without touching the frame.

10'0" 7'0" 1.9' spare · 11" each side

Where it comes from

Why an opening is 10x7

A wide single, and usually a deliberate one. Ten by seven turns up where somebody widened an 8x7 or 9x7 to stop the scraping, and on newer builds where the garage is single but the car is not small.

One vehicle with room to open its door. That is the real benefit over a 9x7 — not that a wider car fits, but that you can get out of the one that already fitted without folding yourself around the frame.

Fitting one

What changes at 10x7

Still a single-door job. One spring is usual at ten feet in bare steel, though an insulated ten-foot door is heavy enough that a fitter may pair them. Nothing unusual about the height.

The opener. Half-horsepower is adequate in steel. The width does not change the lift much; the material does.

Getting hold of one. Usually stock in common panel styles, ordered in the rest.

Two grey raised-panel garage doors side by side seen from inside a garage, each with steel struts across the panels, its own torsion spring on a shaft above the opening, curved track running back to the ceiling and a wall control beside it.
Two doors, two spring assemblies, one pier between them. A single wide door would need none of that and a header instead. — MF Garage Doors, Sebring, Florida.

The mistake

What people get wrong about a 10x7

Widening the opening from nine feet to ten and leaving the header alone. A wider opening is a longer span, and a header sized for nine feet holding ten will sag — slowly, and then visibly, as a door that no longer seals at one end.

What it costs

A 10x7 door, installed

MaterialTypical, installedWorth knowing
Sectional steel$3,170The baseline, and most of the doors on most streets.
Insulated steel$3,920Worth it on an attached garage or one with a room above it.
Steel overlay, carriage look$6,720The swing-door look on a sectional door. Where the price starts climbing.
Wood overlay$14,570Real wood over an insulated core. Beautiful, and it needs refinishing.
Aluminium and glass$8,320Modern, lots of daylight, lower insulation value.

The gap between the cheapest and dearest 10x7 is $16,570, and not one dollar of it is the size. Same opening, same fitting, same morning — what moves the number is the model: panel style, insulation and overlay. Why a door costs what it does →

Rough opening for a 10x7

10'0" × 7'0"

For a sectional door the rough opening equals the door size exactly. A 16x7 door needs a 16'0" wide by 7'0" high finished opening.

Questions

10x7 garage doors, answered

How much does a 10x7 garage door cost?

A 10x7 in sectional steel runs about $2,080 to $4,250 installed, and $2,580 to $5,250 insulated. That is the door, the tracks, the springs, fitting it and taking the old one away. An opener is separate.

What is the rough opening for a 10x7 garage door?

10 feet by 7 feet, exactly. For a sectional door the rough opening is the door size — framing it wider leaves a gap the seal cannot close.

How much clearance do you need for a 10x7?

12" of headroom above the opening for a standard torsion setup, 9" front, 4.5" rear of sideroom each side for the vertical track, and the door height plus 16 inches of backroom. The full table, including low-headroom kits, is on the rough opening guide.

What fits through a 10x7 garage door?

compact car (civic), sedan (camry), small suv (rav4), large suv (suburban), full-size pickup (f-150), cargo van (transit) — one at a time. The measurement that matters is across the mirrors, not the body.

Is an insulated 10x7 worth the extra?

About $500 to $1,000 more. Yes if the garage is attached or there is a room above it — you feel it in the summer and in the heating bill. A detached garage you only park in: skip it.

How long does it take to fit?

Three to five hours for a single door, plus an hour or two if the old one is coming out.

What opener does a 10x7 need?

Half-horsepower is adequate in steel. The width does not change the lift much; the material does.

Is a 10x7 a stock size?

Usually stock in common panel styles, ordered in the rest.

The next size up

10x7 or 12x10?

A 12x10 is 2 feet wider and costs roughly $2,550 more in steel. Worth it if you open car doors inside the garage rather than on the driveway. See the 12x10 →
