Fix it
Garage door keypad not working
It is the battery far more often than anything else, and the tell is that the keypad lights up but the door does not move. A keypad that lights and does nothing has lost its pairing; a keypad that does not light at all has a flat battery or corroded contacts.
Do this first
Press any key. If nothing lights, change the battery — most take a single 9V or a pair of AAA behind the flip-down cover.

What it usually turns out to be
| Cause | How to tell | What happens next | Yours? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat battery | No backlight at all, or a very dim one. | Replace it. Outdoor keypads eat batteries in a Florida summer — expect one a year. | Yes |
| It has lost its pairing | The keys light normally, the door does nothing, and the remotes still work. | Press the learn button on the opener head, then enter your PIN and press enter within thirty seconds. | Yes |
| Corroded contacts | It works intermittently, and worse after rain. | Clean the battery terminals. A keypad that has been rained into for years is usually cheaper to replace than to save. | Yes |

Other faults

The repair
What actually happens on the visit
- Changes the battery first. A keypad lives outdoors and its battery dies faster than a remote's, and this is most calls.
- Re-pairs the keypad to the opener, which also rules out a memory that has been cleared or filled.
- Checks the seal and the contacts for damp. A keypad that works in the morning and not in the evening is usually water, not electronics.
- Checks range — a keypad at the far side of a wide garage, or behind metal, is one that works intermittently before it stops.
How long it takes. Fifteen to thirty minutes. Frequently a battery and a re-pair.
Next time
Can you stop it happening again?
Mostly. Change the battery once a year whether it needs it or not, and replace the rubber seal when it perishes rather than after the water is in.
