Fix it
Garage door stuck
Stuck means one of three things: the door is locked, something is binding, or the spring has gone and the door now weighs too much to move. The way to tell them apart is the emergency release, and it takes about ten seconds.
Do this first
Pull the red cord and try to lift the door by hand. Smooth and light means the opener is at fault. Heavy or immovable means the door itself is, and that is a call rather than a fix.
Before you touch anything
Never change your own springs
A torsion spring on a double garage door holds enough stored energy to break an arm, take out teeth, or worse. It is wound under tension with two steel bars, and if one slips it goes at the speed of the thing it was holding up. People are seriously injured doing this every year, and some are killed. There is no YouTube video that makes this safe, and the part costs less than the emergency room.

What it usually turns out to be
| Cause | How to tell | What happens next | Yours? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The manual lock is thrown | A solid clunk and no movement at all. Common after somebody has been away. | Slide the lock back on the inside of the door. | Yes |
| A broken spring | The door is far too heavy to lift, and there is a gap in the coil above the opening. | Replacement, in pairs, by somebody with winding bars. | Call somebody |
| Rust or debris in the track | It moves an inch and jams, always at the same point. | The track is cleaned and realigned, and the rollers checked. | Call somebody |

What it costs

Other faults

The repair
What actually happens on the visit
- Works out where in its travel it stops, because that is the diagnosis. Stuck at the top, stuck at the bottom and stuck in the middle are three different faults.
- Disconnects the opener and moves the door by hand, feeling for the point it binds.
- Checks the track for a dent, a loose bracket or something in the channel — at the exact height the door stops.
- Checks the springs and cables if the door is heavy rather than obstructed.
How long it takes. Under an hour for an obstruction or a loose bracket. Longer if it is a spring, a cable or a bent section.
Next time
Can you stop it happening again?
Often. A door that has started to feel different — slower, noisier, hesitating at one point — is telling you weeks in advance. Lubrication and tightening the track bolts twice a year deals with most of it.
