Garage door off track

A door comes off its track when something changes the geometry: a car has clipped it, a cable has come off a drum, a roller has failed, or a spring has broken and dropped one side. The door is now held up by less than it was designed to be, and forcing the opener will bend the track and the panels.

Do this first

Stop using the opener. Do not try to lever it back on. If a car is trapped, pull the emergency release and see whether the door can be lifted by two people — if it is jammed or crooked, leave it.

Before you touch anything

Never change your own springs

A torsion spring on a double garage door holds enough stored energy to break an arm, take out teeth, or worse. It is wound under tension with two steel bars, and if one slips it goes at the speed of the thing it was holding up. People are seriously injured doing this every year, and some are killed. There is no YouTube video that makes this safe, and the part costs less than the emergency room.

What do you need?

If the door will not move and a car is stuck behind it, do not wait on a form — leave the door where it is and ring somebody. Do not pull on the spring or the cable.

The repair

What actually happens on the visit

  1. Secures the door before touching it. A door off its track is held up by less than it looks, and this is the step amateurs skip.
  2. Finds out WHY. A roller that jumped because it is worn is a different job from a track bent by a bumper, and putting the door back without answering this means doing it again.
  3. Releases spring tension if the repair needs it — which is why this is not a homeowner job, whatever the video says.
  4. Straightens or replaces the affected track section, reseats the rollers, and checks the track is plumb and parallel down its whole length.
  5. Rebalances, resets the opener limits, tests the reverse.

How long it takes. An hour or two for one section and a few rollers. Half a day if the door was run while off track and the panels are bent, and at that point the panels are the bigger conversation.

Next time

Can you stop it happening again?

Largely yes. Most off-track doors are worn rollers that finally jumped, and worn rollers announce themselves for months by grinding and rattling. Replace them when they start making noise and this call mostly does not happen. The other cause is reversing into it, which no maintenance fixes.
